Nashville SC takes the field for the first time in two weeks on Saturday evening against Chicago Fire, looking to continue its unbeaten start to the 2026 season and tighten its grip on the top of the Supporter’s Shield standings. The Boys in Gold have earned 13 points throughout five MLS games this season, scoring an Eastern Conference-leading 13 goals.

Key Storylines

A goal-filled affair

If one were to distill Nashville’s 2026 season into one word, they would likely settle on some variation of “dominant.” Its last match before the March international break was a 5-0 demolition of Orlando City, preceded by an aggregate win against reigning MLS Cup champions Inter Miami in the Concacaf Champions Cup Round of 16 and a road triumph at Columbus Crew with a rotated squad. The Boys in Gold are one of just two MLS clubs yet to lose this calendar year, sit atop both the Eastern Conference and Supporter’s Shield tables, have the current Golden Boot frontrunner in Sam Surridge and have conceded just three goals in all competitions. On the way, they have scored 21 times, their most-ever by this point in a campaign.

Nashville has put the league on notice. But perhaps no foe it has faced so far will be as anxious as Chicago — who shipped nine goals across two MLS matches in 2025, including a 7-2 defeat at GEODIS Park last April. Surridge netted four times in that game, Hany Mukhtar scored twice and Andy Najar logged a trio of assists, resulting in the joint-most-commanding margin of victory in club history. Throughout nine total meetings, the Boys in Gold possess a hulking +17 goal margin against the Fire — their largest against any foe.

Chicago has enjoyed a solid start to 2026, sitting fifth in the Eastern Conference on seven points with a goal difference of +2. Even so, the Fire will be the best team Nashville has played in MLS to this point based on league standings, providing a formidable test for one of the early season MLS Cup favorites. Will that make for a goal-filled evening? History seems to think so.

Wizards on the wings

In addition to the league’s most prolific goalscorer, Nashville also possesses three of its premier creators: right back Najar and wingers Cristian Espinoza and Warren Madrigal. That trio has combined for seven league assists so far, with Najar and Madrigal sitting joint-third in the league with two dishes apiece, behind Espinoza in second with three.

Each player has had their share of memorable moments. Najar played in Espinoza for his jaw-dropping opener against Orlando. Madrigal’s pair of assists on debut helped Nashville to a 4-1 win against New England — and himself to the best MLS opener of any Boy in Gold ever. Espinoza’s tricky footwork and pinpoint pass helped Mukhtar secure Nashville’s 1-0 triumph at Columbus deep into extra time and set up Surridge’s superb third goal against Orlando. That’s not to mention their scoring exploits, including Espinoza’s equalizer at Miami and Madrigal’s magical curler to make it 5-0 against the Lions.

With a workhorse midfield, a near-impenetrable defense and a striker playing at the peak of his powers, having such immense production and creativity on the wings allows Nashville a freedom in attack few other teams possess. Chicago, with its history of letting Nashville have its way on offense, presents another opportunity for Najar, Madrigal and Espinoza to dazzle — something they have already each done in spades.

Series History + What's Next

Nashville has dominated its all-time series with Chicago, winning six and drawing two of the nine previous meetings between the two clubs. The Boys in Gold have triumphed in each of the last four matches, three of which were clean sheets.

Nashville has a quick turnaround from Saturday’s match, heading back to GEODIS Park for a Tuesday night tilt against Club América in the first leg of the Concacaf Champions Cup quarterfinals before a Saturday evening match at Charlotte FC.
