After a difficult outing last Friday in Fort Lauderdale, Nashville SC returns to GEODIS Park Saturday evening for the second game of the Audi 2025 MLS Cup Playoffs first round against Inter Miami CF. The Boys in Gold, one of MLS’ strongest clubs at home this season, enter Saturday looking to reverse their 3-1 defeat in game one, force a decisive game three and extend their historic season further into November.

Key Storylines

Out for Revenge

After the Boys in Gold blanked Inter Miami 3-0 in both clubs’ first-ever playoff match in 2020, the Herons have been a difficult out for the Music City club. Nashville hasn’t beaten Miami in any of their last 10 meetings, a run which includes the 2023 Leagues Cup Final at GEODIS Park which Nashville lost on penalties.

But where some teams may find breaking this streak a daunting task, Nashville sees an opportunity. Unlike last week’s clash in South Florida, this week’s game — and every game from here on in — is in a backs-against-the-wall, win-or-go-home tournament setting. That’s motivation enough. But having already secured a historic season, featuring the club’s first-ever trophy, its best-ever points finish in the regular season and a record number of goals the Boys in Gold aren’t just hungry for revenge on their conference rivals. They’re ravenous for more success.

Defending the Castle

Although a stout defense is important to any tournament run, offense may well prove to be Nashville’s best form of defense against a Miami team laden with attacking talent. Head coach B.J. Callaghan will, as he has all season, likely rely on two players to lead the charge: 2025 MVP finalist Sam Surridge and 2022 MVP winner Hany Mukhtar. Surridge, who finished joint-second in the MLS Golden Boot rankings with 24 goals, powered the Boys in Gold through the U.S. Open Cup with a further six. Mukhtar, meanwhile, has logged double-digit figures in both goals assists, and scored in both of Nashville’s biggest games this season (the Open Cup Final and last Friday’s match at Miami).

Should the playoffs shake out the way seeding suggests, Saturday could be the last time Nashville plays at GEODIS Park this season, with the better seed hosting from the conference semifinals onward. The Boys’ impeccable home form has been vital to their success this year, but its greatest impact may yet be felt as Nashville looks to even the series. In that way, Saturday is a sort of last stand at The Castle: one Nashville hopes has the potential to launch a devastating counteroffensive that throws Miami on the back foot and amps up Music City’s MLS Cup hopes.

Series History + What's Next

Regardless of the result, Saturday’s match will officially cement Miami as Nashville’s most frequent opponent since the two clubs joined MLS in 2020. The all-time series ledger favors the Herons, with eight wins to the Boys in Gold’s four, plus five draws.

Should Nashville win, the Round One series will go to a winner-takes-all game three back at Chase Stadium next Saturday, November 8, with a berth in the conference semifinals on the line.
