Nashville SC returns to MLS play Saturday evening at Charlotte FC after a midweek Concacaf Champions Cup clash at home, looking to maintain its grip on top spot in the Eastern Conference against their Southern rival. The Boys in Gold have netted 13 points (and 13 goals) through six league games in 2026 and have lost just once in all competitions.
Key Storylines
Young forwards galore
Nashville and Charlotte are two of the premier offensive sides in MLS. Only New York City has scored more in the Eastern Conference and only LAFC, Vancouver and FC Dallas have in the West. Each team differs in its primary attacking outlet, with the Boys in Gold largely leaning on league veterans like Golden Boot leader Sam Surridge, Hany Mukhtar and Cristian Espinoza as Charlotte builds around former English Premier League standout Wilfried Zaha. But they are similar in one key aspect: how they employ a slew of young forwards with the ability to change games.
For Nashville, that has been headlined by Costa Rican international Warren Madrigal — the owner of the best MLS debut in club history — who possesses a dribbling ability and striker’s instinct that has rapidly made him a go-to player on the left wing for head coach B.J. Callaghan. Madrigal was trusted with the start in both Round of 16 legs against Inter Miami as well as this week’s quarterfinal against Club América, stretching defenses with his daring take-ons and pressing energy. That’s not to mention the size and lethal finishing Woobens Pacius or trickery of Ahmed Qasem, who have impressed when given the chance.
Charlotte, meanwhile, has relied on Israeli international Idan Toklomati and former Australian A-League top scorer Archie Goodwin, who have combined for four league goals.
In a matchup with as much quality and experience on both sides as Saturday’s, the breakthrough may well come from whichever team’s mercurial youngsters can produce a bit of magic. Madrigal, Toklomati and Goodwin, none of whom are older than 21, have all proven themselves more than capable.
Battling for midfield control
One of Nashville’s most impressive patterns this season has been its control in the center of the park. Patrick Yazbek, Eddi Tagseth and Matthew Corcoran — in whichever combination — have dominated in and out of possession against a wide array of opposing formations, dictating tempo with their metronomic passing and disrupting attacks with well-timed tackles. It’s a group aimed at industry, and it has excelled.
Tuesday’s draw with Club América and the Round of 16 series with Miami displayed this in spades. In the former, Yazbek and Corcoran dominated the midfield, holding the visitors to one big chance, 0.38 expected goals and just 44% possession. And in the latter, they strangled the reigning MLS Cup Champions to just one goal over two matches, winning the expected-goals ledger and enabling a ruthless counter-attacking strategy that kept the Herons on the back foot despite their possession advantage.
Charlotte, itself enjoying a rampaging start to the season, provides another stern test for Nashville. Pep Biel leads the team with four goals and two assists in six starts, supported by ex-Premier League starter Ashley Westwood and 6-foot-5 defensive midfielder Djibril Diani. It’s a unit loaded with experience, physicality and quality which will require the Boys in Gold to play hungry, feisty and assuredly if they hope to leave the Queen City with a win. Fortunately for Nashville, its stable of midfield workhorses have proven a remarkably reliable bunch, one unfazed by even the firmest of challenges.
Series History + What’s Next
Nashville and Charlotte have an almost dead-even history against one another, splitting their seven previous meetings 3-3-1, with Charlotte holding an 11-9 goal advantage. The teams also split their series last season by identical 2-1 scorelines, with each side winning at home.
The Boys in Gold stay on the road at the conclusion of Saturday’s match, heading to Mexico City for the second leg of the Champions Cup quarterfinals ahead of a Saturday trip to Atlanta United.
