Nashville Soccer Club Defeats Club América in First-Ever International Contest in Club History

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Sept. 21, 2022) – Nashville Soccer Club earned a victory over Liga MX powerhouse Club América on Wednesday night in the 2022 Leagues Cup Showcase Series in front of 24,533 fans at GEODIS Park. The Boys in Gold sealed the victory via penalty kicks (4-2) following a 3-3 draw in regulation time. 

Josh Bauer and Luke Haakenson scored for Nashville SC in the first 15 minutes of the game, with Jack Maher securing the third goal in the 89th minute of play. The match ultimately ended via penalty kicks where Nashville outlasted Club América by converting four penalty kicks. 

The International Stage: Nashville SC’s participation in the 2022 Leagues Cup Showcase series was an appetizer to what fans can expect next season as the highly anticipated 2023 Leagues Cup between all MLS and Liga MX clubs will commence next summer. In addition to tonight’s match against Club América, FC Cincinnati hosted Club Deportivo Guadalajara, while Real Salt Lake will host Atlas FC tomorrow night. 

Penalties at the Palace: Nashville SC took Club América to penalties on Wednesday night, converting four of its five penalties attempted, stopping one and allowing Club América to send one into The Backline’s section. Tah Brian Anunga converted the winning penalty kick to give Nashville the victory. The full breakdown of penalties can be found in the box score. 

Next Match: Nashville SC will have the weekend off due to the international break but will return to GEODIS Park on Sunday, Oct. 2, to take on Houston Dynamo FC in the regular season finale in Music City.
