MLS Goalkeeper and Newcomer of the Year candidate Brian Schwake kept the visitors off the board in the 19th minute with his league-leading third regular season penalty kick save. New York scored the opening goal in the 34th minute via Julian Hall before Rafael Mosquera doubled the visitors' advantage in the 40th minute.

The Boys in Gold mounted a furious comeback, cutting the deficit in half in the 45th minute courtesy of an own goal forced by MLS Defensive Player of the Year candidate Andy Najar and in the 78th minute fellow MVP candidate Cristian Espinoza caused a second Red Bulls own goal to even the score.

MVP candidate Sam Surridge and Espinoza connected for Surridge's team-leading 19th regular season goal in the 91st minute to seal the record-breaking victory.
