The 2026 MLS season is rapidly approaching its final chapters, and with it Nashville SC’s chase of glory. The Boys in Gold lead both the Supporters’ Shield race and Eastern Conference tables through 25 matches, looking to further solidify their grip on top spot Saturday at GEODIS Park against the Chicago Fire. Nashville SC lost the previous matchup 1-0 in Illinois in April but remains the only MLS side yet to taste defeat at home, and can clinch a playoff spot with a win.

A new 9 in town
Perhaps counterintuitively given its spring-to-fall schedule, the summer transfer window is often the more active of the two for MLS teams. The increased buying power with European squads who have finished their seasons allow American clubs to take advantage of free agents and tap into a wider variety of markets. This has borne out in 2026 with several high-profile acquisitions from across the Atlantic, including Antoine Griezmann to Orlando City, Casemiro to Inter Miami and, as it concerns Nashville, Robert Lewandowski to Chicago.
It’s no stretch to call Lewandowski one of the best strikers of all time and within the top 5 attackers of a generation which features Ballon D’Or winners Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema. Across 16 dazzling campaigns between Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich and FC Barcelona and five years in his native Poland beforehand, the 38-year-old amassed more than 750 senior goals and more than 1,100 appearances. Lewandowski owns the Bundesliga record for goals in a single season (41), won eight consecutive Bundesliga titles, sits third in the all-time UEFA Champions League goal charts and has the third-most goals for a European men’s international team in history. Despite his age, he’s been just as devastating since moving to Chicago, accumulating eight goal involvements in 10 appearances.
The Boys in Gold, to put it mildly, have one of the toughest assignments of their season on deck. Few teams throughout Lewandowski’s two decades atop the European game could keep him quiet. But Nashville will fancy its chances at this stage of his career. The Boys in Gold’s defense has been stellar throughout this season, leading MLS in goals conceded and sitting second in clean sheets. Star goalkeeper Brian Schwake is within five shutouts of the league record, backing up two of MLS’ quickest and strongest center backs in Maxwell Woledzi and Jeisson Palacios. That’s not to mention the GEODIS Park crowd; nobody, not even Messi, has been able to break through that.
Making chances count
Nashville’s three-game road stretch did not yield as many points as the league leaders would have hoped. But, as competitors slipped up and it fought to two valuable draws, it also did not show any signs undermining its status as the Shield favorite. Between Sam Surridge’s pair of super goals to snag a point at Miami and Schwake’s shutout at NYCFC, the Boys in Gold have shown their ability to come up big when the moment requires them to.
That said, Nashville’s last three games have not been its most clinical of the season. The Boys in Gold accumulated 4.93 expected goals to their opponents’ 4.44 in that span, but the aggregate scoreline stood 4-3 in their foes’ favor. Some may argue that Nashville was wasteful with the opportunities it created, but just as many should recognize that creating so many quality chances indicates a sustained pattern of attacking pressure. This is bolstered by advantages in total shots and opposition box touches. Even if the results themselves weren’t quite what Nashville hoped, its underlying attacking stats are impressive heading into a matchup with one of the conference’s best offensive teams and most promising young goalkeepers.
In the likes of Surridge and Hany Mukhtar — both consistent xG overperformers — Nashville has a pair of forwards with a history of clinical finishing. Surridge netted a club-record four goals against Chicago last season, while Mukhtar grabbed a hat trick against LAFC worth just 0.53 xG. In Elias Saad, Andy Najar and Cristian Espinoza, it also has three of the league’s premier creative wide players.  The Boys in Gold will have to make their chances count to win against Chicago. But, even in a tough road stretch, they’ve proven they have the tools to do so.
Series History & What’s Next
Nashville has owned the all-time series with Chicago, taking six wins and two draws from the clubs’ 10 previous meetings. The Boys in Gold have never lost at home to the Fire, with the most recent result a 7-2 demolition last April.
Nashville takes a week of rest before resuming home play against Toronto FC next Saturday, Sept. 26.
