Key Storylines
Nashville’s Flying High – After a disappointing road result on the West Coast against the Seattle Sounders, the Boys in Gold responded with an emphatic, record-setting performance against the Chicago Fire at GEODIS Park last Saturday. Seven goals from the team, including a four-goal performance from Sam Surridge, a brace from Hany Mukhtar, and a first goal in gold from Jession Palacios made for a stellar night and a shift in momentum heading into this weekend’s Southern showdown.
Surridge, Muhktar, Andy Najar and head coach BJ Callaghan received Team of the Matchday nominations for last weekend’s performance. Surridge also earned the Player of the Matchday, a first in his MLS career.
Matchup History – Nashville SC has been intertwined with the Five Stripes since entering Major League Soccer in 2020. Atlanta visited Music City for Nashville’s first ever matchup in MLS, and since then, there hasn’t been a shortage of big moments.
Nashville has slowly emerged as the more dominant side in this fixture, boasting a 5W-4D-3L record. The Boys in Gold last visited Atlanta United in September of 2024, emerging with three points, a clean sheet, and BJ Callaghan’s first win as Nashville SC head coach. Alex Muyl opened the scoring in the 5th minute before Hany Mukhtar put the nail in the coffin in the 76th minute.
Atlanta United is on a poor run of form, losing their last three matches and failing to score in any of those losses. The Five Stripes enter the weekend with nine points from 10 matches, a -8 goal difference, and the club’s worst start in their history.
It’s MAYnia Time – This weekend’s match against Atlanta United marks the first in a jam-packed month for the Boys in Gold. Nashville SC must immediately turn around and prepare for an Open Cup Round of 32 match against Chattanooga Red Wolves on May 6. In all, the Boys in Gold will take the field eight times (nine times if Nashville advances past Chattanooga) during the month of May.
