With a playoff spot secured and the U.S. Open Cup trophy glimmering in its pocket, Nashville SC heads north of the border for its final road clash of the MLS regular season Saturday afternoon at CF Montréal. The Boys in Gold (53 points) sit sixth in the Eastern Conference ahead of kickoff, with the opportunity to climb as high as third with a win should results around the league shake out favorably.
Key Storylines
Chasing Home-field Advantage
If Nashville’s aim for the last few match weeks was to confirm its place in the postseason, its aim for the final two match weeks is to try and host postseason games in Music City, where it has only lost twice in 2025. The four highest-placing teams in each conference at the conclusion of the regular season are rewarded with home-field advantage for at least the round of 16 of the MLS Cup, and the race for hosting rights is well and truly on with just six points separating third-placed New York City FC from ninth-placed Columbus.
The Boys in Gold have a—on paper—favorable schedule to chase that target, facing a 13th-placed Montreal team well outside the playoff bubble before fourth-placed Inter Miami comes to Music City. Should the Boys in Gold win both games, they stand a good chance of leaping into the conference’s top four spots and bringing postseason soccer to Tennessee for the first time in two years.
Riding the Trophy Train
Nashville’s U.S. Open Cup title win in Austin on Wednesday was momentous for several reasons—chief among them that it secured the club’s first trophy and the first professional sports championship in city and state history. But it also marked a key shift in the energy around Nashville’s postseason aspirations.
The Boys in Gold endured a tumultuous seven-game stretch featuring a sole victory before last weekend’s win against Houston and the midweek cup triumph on the road righted the ship, handing Nashville a much-needed confidence boost. A taste of success only makes one hungrier for it, and with one trophy under their belts, head coach B.J. Callaghan and company have momentum on their side heading into the home stretch.
Series History + What's Next
Nashville has dominated the all-time series against the Quebecois team, winning five and drawing two of the clubs’ previous eight matches. Montréal has only beaten the Boys in Gold once in their history, a 1-0 win at Stadium Saputo in June 2023, and Nashville tops the all-time goals ledger 16-5. The most recent meeting between the Eastern Conference foes was a 3-0 win for Nashville at GEODIS Park in March, with goals courtesy of Alex Muyl, Josh Bauer and Jonathan Pérez.
Nashville has two weeks to recoup after Saturday’s match, taking a brief recess for the October international break before returning to GEODIS Park at 5 p.m. CT on Saturday, Oct. 18 for its regular-season finale against Inter Miami.
