Nashville SC returns to GEODIS Park Saturday evening against NYCFC, looking to bolster its spot atop both the Eastern Conference and Supporters’ Shield tables going into the summer break. The Boys in Gold sit two points clear in the former and one point clear in the latter through 13 games and are the only MLS club yet to lose at home in 2026.
Key Storylines
A battle of playmakers
Much like last weekend’s showpiece with LAFC, Nashville’s clash with NYCFC will be one between two of the league’s deepest and most productive attacks. Nashville and NYCFC each have players in the top five of the MLS scoring and assistcharts and sit second and fifth, respectively, in the Eastern Conference in goals scored. But among the abundance of talent, two players jump off the page heading into Saturday’s matchup: Hany Mukhtar and Nicolas Fernández.
The pair of playmakers — both of whom float between attacking midfield and the center-forward position depending on the game — have been among the top offensive threats in MLS this season. The duo has combined for 15 goals and nine assists in 2026 as well as four goals and four assists over the last three games, a span over which both teams are undefeated and have won twice. Fernández owns a goal contribution in each of his team’s three games and is a genuine Golden Boot threat. But Mukhtar owns by far the more decorated season of the two, securing a hat trick — including two direct free kick goals — over the weekend as well as a road winner at Estadio Azteca and last-gasp goal at Columbus in March.
If any pair of players have the chance to decide Saturday’s matchup with a moment of brilliance, it’s these two. They have more than enough statistical accolades to back that up, as well as a recent track record of big contributions in big moments. Time to see which of them owns the next one.
American aces
If one focuses too hard on the battle at the top of the pitch, they might miss an equally as fascinating duel between the sticks. Beyond some of the league’s most elite attackers, Nashville and NYCFC also possess two of MLS’ best goalkeepers, ones with just as great a shot of deciding Saturday’s match as any forward on the field.
Nashville’s Brian Schwake and NYCFC’s Matt Freese have been bona-fide superstars in 2026. The former has been arguably the breakout player of the season, emerging from a backup role in 2025 to become a stalwart in net for the best side in the league. The 24-year-old has hardly put a foot wrong all year and has been beaten just 10 times in MLS play, losing just once, while also amassing six clean sheets on the way. He was just as vital to Nashville’s win against LAFC as Mukhtar, too, with seven spectacular saves including a pair of stunners from close range. Freese, meanwhile, is a soccer academic with the shot-stopping credentials to match — he assembled a project at Harvard about how to save penalties — logging three clean sheets and 46 saves as his team punches toward the top of the East.
Schwake and Freese will not, barring something ludicrous, compete face-to-face in the same way the clubs’ midfielders or forwards will. But they will be handed similar assignments and burdened with similar gravity. Should Schwake perform to the level he has throughout 2026, Nashville may well sit top of the Supporters’ Shield table through the summer break. If Freese performs to the level that has made him the presumptive No. 1 for the U.S. Men’s National Team, NYCFC will bolster its chances at a bye for the MLS Cup Playoffs and further cement his status in the national setup ahead of the FIFA World Cup.
Series History & What’s Next
Nashville and NYCFC have met eight previous times in MLS play, each owning three wins. The Boys in Gold have outscored their opponents 11-10 in that span — Mukhtar has seven goal involvements in the series — but the squad from New York had the upper hand in 2025, taking a 2-1 win at home and a 2-2 draw at GEODIS Park.
Nashville endures a lengthy break before returning to the pitch, where it will meet Southern rival Atlanta United on July 17 in Music City.
