Key Storylines
Much Needed Rest – After playing nine matches in the month of May and going unbeaten during that stretch, the Boys in Gold got some much-needed rest during the International Break in the first week in June.
On the Road Again – With MAYnia now in the rearview, the Club looks to extend its unbeaten streak into June, starting on the road in the Windy City with the Chicago Fire. The Boys in Gold won’t return to GEODIS Park for a match during the month of June, as their schedule takes them on the road to play the New England Revolution and D.C. United after Chicago.
Continuing The Gold Standard – The Boys in Gold will continue to look to their DP’s Hany Mukhtar and Sam Surridge to lead the offensive attack, which tallied 15 goals in the month of May.
Surridge enters Saturday with the second-most goals in MLS this season with 11, scoring both goals in MAYnia’s finale 2-2 draw against New York City FC. Surridge and Mukhtar both lead the Club in goal contributions as well, with Surridge tallying 14 (11 goals, 3 assists) and Mukhtar with 13 (7 goals, 6 assists).
Scouting Chicago – The Fire are coming off a 7-1 road win against D.C. United and enters the week sitting ninth in the Eastern Conference. They have a goal differential of +6 (35-29) and 25 points through 16 matches played.
The Boys in Gold hold a strong record against the Fire (5W-2D-1L) going into Saturday’s matchup with only one goal allowed while playing in the Windy City and a +15 goal differential all time (20-5).
Belgian forward Hugo Cuypers leads the Fire with 10 goals scored across 15 matches, while Danish midfielder Philip Zinckernagel has secured 14 goal contributions.
