Nashville SC sits on the precipice of regular-season glory. The Eastern Conference and Supporters’ Shield titles are both in reach for the first-place Boys in Gold (63 points) ahead of Wednesday’s kickoff against Sporting Kansas City (22 points, 15th in the West) at GEODIS Park, the first of three remaining home matches. Nashville sits 12 points clear atop the league-wide table and 14 points ahead in the East with just 18 points still to play for, having yet to lose at home in MLS play.
Key Storylines
A new frontman
The fortunes of Kansas City’s two football teams couldn’t be much more opposite. While the NFL’s Chiefs look well on course for a third Super Bowl win and fourth appearance in the last five years, Sporting finds itself firmly in the Wooden Spoon race yet again. Sporting has slumped to 13th, 15th and 15th in the three seasons since finishing in one of the Western Conference’s Wild Card spots in 2023.
This unenviable stretch has inspired several changes in the coaching staff and first-team roster, including the offseason hiring of Swiss head coach Raphaël Wicky. But perhaps an even bigger move this year was the departure of star forward Dejan Joveljic, traded to Seattle in the summer for $6 million. The Serbia international accumulated 26 goals and five assists across his year-and-a-half in Missouri despite his team’s poor fortunes and has carried that form into his new club, grabbing four goals in his first five appearances.
It would be reasonable, given Joveljic’s record, to assume that letting such a prolific attacker go would harm Kansas City further. But that couldn’t be further from the truth. Out went one star forward and in came another: Brazilian winger André Luiz from Greek giant Olympiacos FC, for a club-record $18 million.
The Rio de Janeiro native has torn up MLS in his seven league starts for the club, scoring seven goals alongside four consecutive MLS Team of the Matchday nods. He enters Wednesday’s match on the back of five straight games with a goal, including wins against two of the best teams in the West in Houston and LAFC. Even with just 475 league minutes to his name, Luiz sits in the 90th percentile or better among MLS wingers in goals, expected goals on target, shots and shots on target, per FotMob, numbers which only improve when assessed per 90 minutes.
Nashville has the league’s best defense, its presumptive Goalkeeper of the Year (Brian Schwake) and MLS’s only invincible home record. Its own forward line is diverse and dangerous, stocked with one of the league’s premier strikers in Sam Surridge, its best attacking midfielder in Hany Mukhtar and one of its most creative wingers in Cristian Espinoza. The Boys in Gold’s confidence is also at an all-time high, coming off three successive wins. Luiz is a livewire and a nightmare assignment. But if any team can slow Sporting’s new superstar down, it’s the one he faces Wednesday night.
The penultimate step?
Much ado has been made about the milestones Nashville can reach by the end of this regular season should games go its way. Among them: the league’s points record, clean sheet record, defensive record and an unbeaten season at home. The two grandest prizes on offer before the MLS Cup Playoffs begin next month — a No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference and the Supporters’ Shield — are within the Boys in Gold’s grasp, too. And while they practically have a hand on both already, should Wednesday end the way they want, the second may not be far behind.
All the potential clinching scenarios for both the regular-season title in the East and Supporters’ Shield are too extensive to list here. But there is a clear path to securing both this week, starting with a win against Kansas City. Should the Boys in Gold take three points at home and Vancouver drop points in either of their next two matches (they play a St. Louis team riding a 20-match unbeaten run on Wednesday), a victory in San Jose on Saturday ensures the Shield and, with it, the No. 1 overall seed in the playoffs. Nashville can guarantee the East’s top seed with a win on Wednesday and dropped points by Chicago and Miami.
Put another way, the Boys in Gold are on the precipice of everything they’ve hoped to achieve this regular season. And while they can’t secure MLS’s greatest non-playoff prize just yet, Wednesday potentially marks the penultimate step in their quest for it.
Series History & What’s Next
Despite their diverting fortunes as of late, Nashville and Kansas City own an even series against one another, split at two wins apiece without any ties. The Boys in Gold hold a slim 7-5 goals edge but have yet to beat Sporting at home, losing the only previous fixture in Music City 2-1. The most recent meeting was a September 2023 fixture in Missouri, a 3-0 victory for Nashville.
The Boys in Gold hit the road upon the conclusion of Wednesday’s match for their third Western Conference clash in eight days, trekking to Northern California for a Saturday night kickoff against San Jose.
