Final Notes: Nashville SC 3-1 Minnesota United

Final Notes 3-7-26 1920

The Boys in Gold keep marching onward.

Nashville SC continued its rampage Saturday night at GEODIS Park, dismantling Minnesota United 3-1 to stay unbeaten in 2026, placing them joint-top of the Eastern Conference standings and firmly amongst the early season favorites for the MLS Cup. The Boys in Gold and Loons kept pace with each other for much of a frenetic first half, but some stellar individual work and mesmerizing passages of team-wide play secured a comfortable, record-breaking win for the home side by full time.

Here’s what we learned.

Sam keeps soaring.

Sam Surridge has always been a prolific goalscorer for Nashville. But the Englishman has stepped up his game since the start of 2025, evolving from one of the best strikers in MLS to arguably the best. Despite missing Nashville’s road clash at FC Dallas a week prior through illness, Surridge’s brace against Minnesota on Saturday means he now leads the Golden Boot race with four goals in two games.

Each of Surridge’s goals showcased a vital aspect of his evolving all-round game: specifically, his positional sense and close-control ability. After Cristian Espinoza and Hany Mukhtar combined to open space on the edge of the box for Patrick Yazbek, Surridge charged forward to meet the midfielder’s left-foot curler, poking it past the helpless Minnesota goalkeeper. Replays showed that the ball bonked off his upper thigh and in, but the touch was effective nonetheless, handing Nashville a valuable 1-0 advantage in a back-and-forth opening frame.

Surridge’s second goal was far prettier. Again, Espinoza and Yazbek combined on the edge of the box to find an on-rushing Surridge, who took a soft touch before blasting the ball into the net.

Patrick’s Day

Surridge will rightfully receive much of the credit for Nashville’s overwhelming offensive performance Saturday. But if Surridge was the driver of his team’s victory, Yazbek was the car.

The midfielder put in his strongest performance of the season against Minnesota, dominating the center of the park with his boundless energy, pinpoint passing and ruthlessness in the final third. Whether it be stepping into the center of a defensive three to cover for his teammates, carrying the ball forward himself or slicing through Minnesota’s backline to find Surridge, Nashville’s No. 8 was key to everything his team did well on both ends of the field, punctuated by a spectacular pair of assists.

Yazbek has been central to head coach B.J. Callaghan’s engine room since joining the club in the summer of 2024, blossoming into one of his team’s most important players and one of MLS’s premier box-to-box midfielders in the process. He has been trusted with the start in every MLS game this season and played the full 90 minutes in the two consecutive matches, a testament to his head coach’s trust.

He’s a mainstay with room to get even better. And with the FIFA World Cup 26™ on the horizon and three potential club trophies on offer, the Australian international’s 2026 breakout truly could not have come at a better time.

Milestones upon milestones

Nashville has made somewhat of a habit of breaking records this season. Its 14 goals through five games are the most in club history, its four wins and one draw in that span are its best-ever start and Warren Madrigal’s three goals involvements against New England was the highest among any player in their Nashville debut. But the Boys in Gold didn’t stop at those records, cracking a fair few more against Minnesota.

Blockbuster offseason signing Espinoza secured his first goal for the club and was instrumental to the other two, playing in Mukhtar and Yazbek, respectively, to set up Surridge. Reed Baker-Whiting made his MLS debut for the club after joining from Seattle Sounders, deputizing admirably for longtime left-back Dan Lovitz. Surridge earned his 50th goal involvement for the club with his brace. And then, of course, there’s Brian Schwake — the lone Nashville player to log every minute in all competitions this season — who became the first goalkeeper in club history to remain undefeated through his first 10 starts (nine wins, one draw).

It’s anyone’s guess what other records might be broken this season. Mukhtar, for one, is only two goal involvements away from hitting 150 in his MLS career. But the joy, fluidity and ruthless efficiency with which Nashville played Saturday and has played broadly in 2026 has unlocked the best of this roster. And with more than 30 games still to play, chances are high its ceiling will continue to raise, breaking history numerous other times on the way.
