Nashville SC hits the road after a two-game homestand for its MLS return at Philadelphia Union Saturday evening, looking to keep hold of its spot atop the Eastern Conference table between two high-stakes Concacaf Champions Cup semifinal matches. The Boys in Gold (22 points) sit three points ahead of Inter Miami in second with a game fewer played, holding a goal difference of plus-15 through nine games.
Key Storylines
Another strong outing for Schwake?
Tuesday evening’s narrow 1-0 loss to Tigres UANL at GEODIS Park was a frustrating one for Nashville. But there was a clear bright spot for the Boys in Gold despite the result: goalkeeper Brian Schwake, who put in yet another commanding performance in net. The 24-year-old American hardly put a foot wrong. He registered six jaw-dropping saves, including a superb one-on-one stop just before Tigres’ eventual opener, faced 3.34 expected goals on target and prevented 2.34 of them, and acted as a vital option in possession as Nashville looked to break its opponent’s press.
Tuesday wasn’t Schwake’s only dominant showing this season, though. Of the 21 shots he has faced in MLS play, only six have resulted in goals and only one has resulted in a loss. He averages just under one clean sheetevery two games for the Eastern Conference’s best defense. He the only Nashville player to log every available minute in 2026 and has helped the Boys in Gold to their best-ever start to a season, including aggregate wins against Inter Miami and Club América and a vital penalty save to win on the road at Charlotte. It would not be hyperbolic to call Schwake one of the best goalkeepers in MLS this campaign.
Philadelphia has struggled to score throughout league play so far, netting just nine times in 10 games. But the Union have proven a remarkably tricky outfit for Nashville throughout the clubs’ shared history, with last season’s win at Subaru Park the first and to this day only road victory by the Boys in Gold. Nashville will need another strong outing from its No. 99 if it hopes to escape Pennsylvania with a clean sheet and a win, particularly with a daunting Champions Cup semifinal second leg in Mexico looming four days later.
A new-look Union
Perhaps no side in MLS has endured a more contrasting past six months than Philadelphia. At the end of November, the Union found themselves deserved winners of the Supporters’ Shield trophy and Eastern Conference semifinalists in the MLS Cup Playoffs. No club in MLS allowed fewer goals than the Union, none had more wins and only four had a higher goal difference. By all metrics, Philadelphia was one of the best teams in the league in 2025, with a strong cohort of young talent ready to break out in 2026 and send the club to greater heights.
Fast forward to today, however, and Philadelphia sits bottom of the Eastern Conference with just one win to its name — a 2-1 victory against C.F. Montréal — and only one clean sheet. Star forward Tai Baribo transferred to D.C. United this offseason and Milan Iloski, a double-digit goalscorer last season for San Diego, has struggled to recapture his 2025 form. If there’s any time to play the Union, it seems to be now.
A run of poor form or a tough start to the season does not guarantee Nashville a result. MLS is a fickle league, after all; the Boys in Gold had beat Philadelphia just one time in league play prior to last season’s sweep with a combined three goals scored to their opponent’s nine. But the Union’s defensive struggles in 2026 combined with Nashville’s outstanding attack provides a clear mismatch, one the Boys in Gold will fancy their chances at exploiting no matter which lineup they decide to field.
Series History & What’s Next
Philadelphia leads the all-time series with Nashville 4-3-2 in MLS play, staying unbeaten against the Music City club from 2021 until the Boys in Gold’s pair of wins last season, plus a 3-1 victory in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup semifinal. Hungarian international forward Daniel Gazdag, now a Designated Player at Columbus Crew, leads the rivalry with six goals, with each of Hany Mukhtar and Sam Surridge scoring twice.
Nashville stays on the road upon the conclusion of Saturday’s match, heading to Mexico for the second leg of its Champions Cup semifinal against Tigres on Tuesday night.
