Mukhtar returns, Leal starts for Costa Rica

NASHVILLE – Nashville SC’s MLS roster has grown over the last few weeks.

After signing attacking midfielders Hany Mukhtar and Randall Leal, Nashville SC now has seven players signed to the club’s MLS roster for 2020. As we continue to build towards kickoff in MLS, we’ll keep you up to date on what Nashville’s future players are doing with their current clubs. Here’s a roundup of what’s been happening with the first MLS Boys in Gold.

Randall Leal

Acquired by Nashville SC on September 6. He will join the club in January 2020.

Position: Midfielder/Winger
Current Club: Saprissa (Costa Rica)

The club’s newest acquisition got the chance to shine on the international stage on his first night as a member of Nashville SC. He earned another cap for the Costa Rican National Team in a friendly against Uruguay, playing 60 minutes in a 2-1 loss. He also had a fantastic chance to score early on, but his one-touch chance hit the arms of the goalkeeper and trickled wide.

Leal will re-join his current club, Saprissa, after the international break as it faces Deportiva San Carlos this Wednesday night and La U Universitarios on Saturday night. He will remain with Saprissa until January, when he will officially join Nashville SC.

Hany Mukhtar

Acquired on August 27 as the club’s first Designated Player. He will join the club in January 2020.

Position: Midfielder
Current Club: Brøndby IF

Mukhtar made his first appearance of the season on September 1, as he was recovering from an offseason injury. He played the entire second half of a 1-0 loss at Midtjylland. Mukhtar had one of the most dangerous chances of the match for Brøndby, taking a shot from distance that forced a diving save from the opposing keeper. In total, he was accurate on 77% of his passes and created three chances.

He has also appeared in a couple of matches for Brøndby’s reserves during the international break. Mukhtar and Brøndby return to league play this Sunday against Nordsjælland at 11:00 am CT. The match will be streamed on ESPN+.

David Accam

Acquired by Nashville SC on May 16, 2019. He will join Nashville SC at the conclusion of the 2019 season.

Position: Winger
Current Club: Columbus Crew SC

Since playing all 90 minutes in a loss to NYCFC on August 21, Accam has made one more appearance for Columbus, playing the final 23 minutes of the club’s 3-1 win over FC Cincinnati in the Hell is Real rivalry match. He was also an unused substitute in Columbus’ 1-1 draw with the Chicago Fire.

The Crew is back in action this Saturday night in a match against Atlanta United.

Aníbal Godoy

Acquired by Nashville SC on August 7, 2019. He will join Nashville SC at the conclusion of the 2019 season.

Position: Midfielder
Current Club: San Jose Earthquakes (MLS)

Godoy made his return from injury on August 21 in a 4-0 loss to LAFC. He played all 90 minutes, registering one shot. Since then, he has continued to train and get back to 100% fitness, and has been an unused substitute in two San Jose victories. San Jose is back in action on Wednesday night against Real Salt Lake before traveling to the Big Apple to take on NYCFC on Saturday. With a few San Jose players returning from international duty, Godoy could see some minutes this week.

Cameron Lancaster

Acquired by Nashville SC on December 20, 2018.

Position: Forward
Current Club: Nashville SC (USL)

Since Daniel Ríos was sidelined with an injury after Nashville SC’s loss to New York Red Bulls II, Lancaster has played an important role in Nashville SC’s attack. While he hasn’t found the back of the net, he has been a workhorse with his shooting ability and with the attention he has drawn from defenders. Since Lancaster re-entered the starting lineup, Nashville has picked up two wins, including a statement 2-1 win at the Tampa Bay Rowdies. Lancaster and Nashville SC are back in action next Tuesday against Birmingham Legion FC.

Derrick Jones

Acquired by Nashville SC on May 9, 2019.

Position: Midfielder
Current Club: Nashville SC (USL)

Jones has been out of the Nashville lineup since suffering an injury back in May. However, he has been back in training as a full participant and was upgraded to “questionable” on Nashville SC’s injury report last week. He is getting closer to returning to action for Nashville.

Daniel Ríos

Acquired by Nashville SC on November 20, 2018.

Position: Forward
Current Club: Nashville SC (USL)

Nashville SC’s first MLS signing has been sidelined with an injury since the loss to NYRBII on August 21. Despite missing the last two matches, he has played in every other match for Nashville so far this season and remains in second place in the USL Championship in goals with 17.
